The work was published in 2 volumes that dealt with the extensive investigation into occult matters regarding the apparitions of angels , demons and other spirits. It included dissertations on various topics of Magic , sorcery , witchcraft and instances of vampires , revenants and individuals returning from the grave.

This study analyzed accounts of these various topics located in the Bible , mythology, cultural legends and famous accounts of historically documented cases or claims. The new version included letters and dissertations by some of his readers and extra chapters as a response to refutations and various claims.

The total work consists of chapters contained in two volumes. The dissertation is divided into four parts. In the first, Calmet speaks of good angels. In the second, of the appearance of bad angels. In the third, of the apparitions of souls of the dead. In the fourth, of the appearance of living men to others living, absent, distant, and this unknown to those who appear, occasionally adding research on magic, wizards , and witches , on the Sabbath , oracles , and the obsession and possession by demons throughout the volumes.

He used a scientific approach when looking into pre-modern cases of witchcraft, vampires, superstitious beliefs and various other topics of the occult. He delved into the use of the scientific method, biology, psychology, chemistry, etymology and investigated the history of various legends of folklore to determine whether a claim of hauntings, apparitions or magic were truth or fraud. The treatise as a whole consists of extensive research across a wide range of topics. The first tome contains 52 chapters and mostly deals with the apparitions of spirits, angels and demons while also covering the study of magic, sorcery and witchcraft.

  • Some were of approbation but also contained in this collection was a letter written by Marquis of Maffei that was of itself a selected dissertation on magical studies that was written in 16 chapters. Calmet, doubtful of the circumstances involved in the Loudun Possessions , made a detailed comparison to other cases he believed was more true to the principle symptoms of demonic possession. Calmet researched a judicial case that described the possession of Mademoiselle Elizabeth de Ranfaing, who having become a widow in , was later sought in marriage by a physician afterwards burned under judicial sentence for being a practicing magician.

    He studied at the Benedictine monastery at Breuil and entered the order in He was ordained to the priesthood in Calmet taught philosophy and theology at the abbey at Moyen-Moutier and during the early years of his career worked on a massive volume commentary of the Bible, which appeared between and His biblical writings established him as a leading scholar, and he spent many years trying to popularize the work of biblical exegesis in the church. The first volume of this work dealt with spirits and apparitions, but it was the second volume, on revenants and vampires, that stirred up controversy.

    Like the work of his Italian colleague Archbishop Gioseppe Davanzati, Calmet's study of vampirism was set off by waves of vampire reports from Germany and eastern Europe. Vampirism, for all practical purposes, did not exist in France and was largely unknown to the scholarly community there until the early eighteenth century. Calmet was impressed with the detail and corroborative testimonies of incidents of vampirism coming out of Eastern Europe and believed that it was unreasonable to simply dismiss them.

    As a theologian, he recognized that the existence and actions of such beings could have an important bearing on various theological conclusions concerning the nature of the afterlife. Calmet thought it necessary to establish the veracity of such reports and to understand the phenomena in light of the church's world view.

    Calmet finished his work a short time after the Sorbonne roundly condemned the reports and, especially, the desecration of the bodies of people believed to be vampires. Calmet defined a vampire as a person who had been dead and buried and then returned from the grave to disturb the living by sucking their blood and even causing death. The only remedy for vampirism was to dig up the body of the vampire and either sever its head and drive a stake through the chest or burn the body. Using that definition, Calmet collected as many accounts of vampirism as possible from official reports, newspapers, eyewitness reports, travelogues, and critical pieces from his learned colleagues.
